Summary

A cohort study comparing Danggwijakyak-san administration group (38 patients) and non-administration group (38 patients) in 76 pregnant women with severe lower limb edema in late pregnancy. After 4 weeks of treatment, lower limb circumference decreased by an average of 2.8 cm, with subjective discomfort scores from edema also improving by 58%. No significant changes in blood pressure or proteinuria confirmed safety.

A pre-post comparison study performing modified Ssanghwa-tang and moxibustion treatment for 8 weeks in 52 postpartum mothers complaining of postpartum wind (postpartum systemic joint pain, chills). After treatment, joint pain VAS decreased 66% from 7.1 to 2.4, with chills symptoms also improving by 72%. Serum inflammation markers (ESR, CRP) also recovered to normal range.

Eighteen RCTs (total 1,542 patients) evaluating acupuncture effects for postpartum depression were meta-analyzed. EPDS scores in the acupuncture group decreased by an average of 6.8 points, showing significant improvement compared to controls (3.2 points). Showed equivalent effects to antidepressants with the advantage of not requiring breastfeeding cessation.

Key Conclusion

Acupuncture is an effective non-pharmacological treatment for postpartum depression and can be safely applied to breastfeeding mothers.

Summary

An RCT comparing herbal medicine (modified Bangpungtongseong-san) and electroacupuncture treatment with dietary therapy in 104 women whose weight had not recovered 6 months or more postpartum. After 12 weeks of treatment, weight decreased by an average of 5.8 kg in the Korean medicine combination treatment group, superior to dietary therapy group (2.9 kg). Body fat percentage and waist circumference also significantly decreased.

Key Conclusion

Combined herbal medicine and acupuncture therapy is more effective than dietary therapy alone for weight loss in postpartum obesity and contributes to body composition improvement.

A cohort study comparing combined vaginal fumigation and herbal medicine (modified Wandae-tang) group (50 patients) and herbal medicine alone group (48 patients) in 98 women complaining of chronic leukorrhea. After 8 weeks of treatment, discharge volume decreased by 68% in the combination group, significantly more effective than monotherapy group (42%). Vaginal discharge pH also recovered to normal range.

An RCT comparing pelvic floor electroacupuncture treatment (PC1, CV3, CV4) and pelvic floor exercise (Kegel exercise) in 92 women with stress urinary incontinence. After 8 weeks of treatment, urinary incontinence frequency decreased 71% from 14.2 to 4.1 times per week in the electroacupuncture group, superior to the Kegel group (48% reduction). One-hour pad test weight also significantly decreased.

A 12-week pre-post comparison study performing Chuna and acupuncture treatment in 48 women with pelvic floor weakness (MOS grade 3 or below) postpartum. After treatment, pelvic floor muscle strength improved from MOS average 2.1 to 3.8, with vaginal pressure measurements also significantly increased. Improvements were observed even in patients with comorbid urinary incontinence symptoms.

Studies were reported showing positive results on TSH normalization and fT4 level improvement with qi-tonifying blood-nourishing prescriptions such as Bojungikgi-tang and Palmul-tang. An RCT comparing deer antler pharmacopuncture and placebo acupuncture in 78 patients with female pattern baldness (Ludwig classification type I-II). After 24 weeks of treatment, hair density increased by an average of 28.4% in the deer antler pharmacopuncture group, with anagen hair ratio also improving from 62% to 78%. Scalp blood flow also significantly increased on ultrasound Doppler.
