Summary

A meta-analysis of 24 RCTs (2,018 patients) evaluating endocrine modulation effects of herbal medicine treatment in women with hormonal imbalance (estrogen-progesterone ratio abnormalities). The herbal medicine administration group showed normalizing tendency in estrogen/progesterone ratio, with also significantly improved FSH and LH levels. Improvement rates of menstrual cycle-related symptoms were also high.

Key Conclusion

Herbal medicine treatment is effective for endocrine axis modulation of female hormonal imbalance and contributes to fundamental improvement of various gynecological symptoms.

A cohort study comparing herbal medicine (modified Changchul) administration and metformin administration groups in 118 women with PCOS comorbid with insulin resistance. After 16 weeks of treatment, HOMA-IR decreased by an average of 32% in the herbal medicine group, showing similar improvement to the metformin group (38%). Gastrointestinal side effects were markedly fewer in the herbal medicine group.

Key Conclusion

Summary

Twelve studies (986 patients) evaluating effects of Korean medicine treatment for endometriosis-related infertile women were systematically reviewed. Natural pregnancy rate in the combined herbal medicine and acupuncture group was 34.2%, significantly higher than expected management group (18.7%). CA-125 level reduction and endometriosis lesion size reduction were also observed.

Key Conclusion

Korean medicine treatment improves natural pregnancy rates of endometriosis-related infertility and contributes to disease activity reduction.

A pre-post comparison study performing combined herbal medicine (Gamisoyo-san), acupuncture, and moxibustion therapy for 12 weeks in 84 women with moderate-to-severe menopausal symptoms (Kupperman Index 25 or higher). After treatment, Kupperman Index decreased 60.5% from an average of 32.4 to 12.8, with significant improvements observed in 10 of 11 sub-items.

An RCT comparing combined acupuncture and herbal medicine (Gyejibokryeong-hwan combined with Goonggwigyoae-tang) with tranexamic acid in 102 women with menorrhagia due to uterine fibroids. After 6 months of treatment, menstrual volume decreased by 52% in the Korean medicine treatment group, showing similar effects to the tranexamic acid group (44%). Fibroid volume significantly decreased only in the Korean medicine group (18.3%).

A cohort study comparing Sipjeondaebo-tang administration group (44 patients) and iron supplement alone group (44 patients) in 88 pregnant women with mid-pregnancy anemia (Hb less than 10 g/dL). After 8 weeks, hemoglobin increased by an average of 2.4 g/dL in the herbal medicine combination group, superior to the iron supplement alone group (1.6 g/dL). Gastrointestinal side effects including dyspepsia were also fewer in the herbal medicine group.

Key Conclusion

Sipjeondaebo-tang is more effective than iron supplements for hemoglobin improvement of pregnancy anemia, with excellent gastrointestinal tolerability.
