Summary

Sixteen RCTs (1,680 patients) evaluating bone density improvement effects of herbal medicine treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis were systematically reviewed. Lumbar BMD increased by an average of 3.2% and femoral neck BMD also increased by 2.1% in the herbal medicine administration group. Bone formation marker (osteocalcin) increased while bone resorption marker (CTX) decreased, showing bidirectional effects.

Key Conclusion

Herbal medicine treatment contributes to bone density maintenance and improvement in postmenopausal osteoporosis women and is effective for restoring bone metabolism balance.

Summary

A meta-analysis of 12 RCTs (1,124 patients) evaluating long-term effects of Yukmijihwang-tang-based herbal medicine in postmenopausal women with bone density decline. Lumbar BMD increased by an average of 4.1% with administration of 6 months or more, with fracture risk decreasing by 35%. Showed significant additional improvement effects compared to calcium supplement alone group.

Summary

An RCT comparing Sihosogan-san and ibuprofen in 88 women with cyclic mastalgia. After 3 months of treatment, mastalgia VAS scores decreased by 71% (6.9 to 2.0) in the Sihosogan-san group, more effective than the ibuprofen group (58% reduction). Mammary edema on breast ultrasound also significantly decreased.

Key Conclusion

Sihosogan-san shows superior pain relief effects compared to NSAIDs for cyclic mastalgia and also contributes to mammary edema improvement.
