Summary

Effectiveness and safety of herbal medicine treatment for acute and sequela phases of herpes zoster were literature-reviewed. In the acute phase, Yongdamsagan-tang and heat-clearing toxin-resolving prescriptions were mainly utilized, while in the sequela phase, qi-tonifying blood-nourishing prescriptions were used. Herbal medicine treatment was effective for pain reduction, rash healing promotion, and neuralgia prevention, with no serious adverse reactions reported.

Key Conclusion

Herbal medicine treatment can be utilized as an effective and safe treatment through pattern-based therapy appropriate for each phase of herpes zoster.

Summary

Seventy-four patients with idiopathic chronic pruritus were randomly assigned to blood-nourishing wind-dispelling herbal medicine (Samul-tang combined with Sopung-san) or placebo groups and compared over 8 weeks. The herbal medicine group showed significant decreases in pruritus VAS, pruritus frequency, and sleep disturbance scores compared to placebo. Serum IL-31 levels also significantly decreased in the herbal medicine group.

Blood-nourishing wind-dispelling herbal medicine is an effective treatment that simultaneously reduces symptoms and inflammatory mediators of chronic pruritus.
