Summary

A 12-month pre-post comparison study combining acupuncture (BL23, BL11, GB39) and weight-bearing exercise in 72 postmenopausal women with osteopenia (T-score -1.0 to -2.5). Lumbar BMD increased by an average of 2.4%, with femoral BMD also increasing by 1.8%. Fall risk assessment scores also significantly improved.

Key Conclusion

Combined acupuncture and exercise is an effective non-pharmacological strategy for bone density improvement and fall risk reduction in women with osteopenia.

An RCT comparing electroacupuncture treatment (HT7, EX-HN3, GV20) and sham acupuncture in 96 women with menopausal insomnia. After 8 weeks of treatment, PSQI total scores in the electroacupuncture group improved from 14.2 to 6.8, with sleep latency shortened by an average of 28 minutes. Objective sleep efficiency measured by actigraphy also improved from 78% to 89%.

Key Conclusion

Electroacupuncture treatment improves both subjective and objective sleep indicators of menopausal insomnia and is effective as a sleep medication alternative.

A cohort study evaluating effects of combined herbal medicine (modified Gwibi-tang) and acupuncture therapy in 134 women with menopausal depression symptoms (BDI 14 or higher). After 16 weeks of treatment, BDI scores decreased from an average of 21.3 to 9.7, with also significantly improved anxiety (BAI) scores. Showed equivalent effects compared to SSRI users.

Key Conclusion

Korean medicine combination treatment shows effects equivalent to SSRIs for improving menopausal depression symptoms and is a treatment option with less side effect burden.

Twenty RCTs (total 2,156 patients) evaluating acupuncture effects on menopausal hot flashes were meta-analyzed. The acupuncture group showed an average 8.4 reduction in hot flash frequency per week, with also significantly alleviated severity. Showed similar effects to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with almost no side effects.

Key Conclusion

Acupuncture significantly reduces frequency and severity of menopausal hot flashes and is an effective alternative for women who cannot use HRT.

A 6-month cohort study comparing vaginal fumigation combination group (62 patients) and antibiotic alone group (62 patients) in 124 women with recurrent vaginitis. Six-month recurrence rate in the vaginal fumigation combination group was 18.3%, significantly lower than the antibiotic alone group (41.9%), with also restored normal lactobacilli ratio in the vagina.

Key Conclusion

Vaginal fumigation therapy significantly reduces recurrence rates of chronic recurrent vaginitis and contributes to normalization of vaginal microbial environment.

An RCT comparing combined herbal medicine (modified Sobokchugeo-tang) and acupuncture therapy with GnRH agonists in 96 women diagnosed with adenomyosis. After 6 months of treatment, pain reduction rate in the Korean medicine combination treatment group (68%) was similar to the GnRH group (72%), but recurrence rate after treatment completion was markedly lower in the Korean medicine group (22%) compared to GnRH group (58%).

Key Conclusion

Korean medicine combination treatment shows effects similar to GnRH agonists for pain management of adenomyosis, with lower recurrence rates favoring long-term management.

Fifteen RCTs (total 1,284 patients) evaluating acupuncture effects on chronic pelvic pain related to endometriosis were systematically reviewed. The acupuncture group showed average 2.8-point reduction in chronic pelvic pain VAS scores, with also significantly alleviated dyspareunia and dyschezia. Adverse events were markedly fewer compared to GnRH agonists.

A cross-sectional study analyzing hormonal changes from pharmacopuncture (Angelica, Cnidium pharmacopuncture) treatment in 92 women with oligomenorrhea (cycle 40 days or longer). The pharmacopuncture treatment experience group showed FSH/LH ratio closer to normal range, with significantly higher estradiol levels. Stress-related cortisol levels also tended to be lower.
