An RCT comparing electroacupuncture treatment (HT7, EX-HN3, GV20) and sham acupuncture in 96 women with menopausal insomnia. After 8 weeks of treatment, PSQI total scores in the electroacupuncture group improved from 14.2 to 6.8, with sleep latency shortened by an average of 28 minutes. Objective sleep efficiency measured by actigraphy also improved from 78% to 89%.

Key Conclusion

Electroacupuncture treatment improves both subjective and objective sleep indicators of menopausal insomnia and is effective as a sleep medication alternative.

Summary

A 12-month pre-post comparison study combining acupuncture (BL23, BL11, GB39) and weight-bearing exercise in 72 postmenopausal women with osteopenia (T-score -1.0 to -2.5). Lumbar BMD increased by an average of 2.4%, with femoral BMD also increasing by 1.8%. Fall risk assessment scores also significantly improved.

Key Conclusion

Combined acupuncture and exercise is an effective non-pharmacological strategy for bone density improvement and fall risk reduction in women with osteopenia.

Summary

A combined herbal medicine (Taraxacum and Trichosanthes seed modified prescription) and acupuncture (RN17, ST18, SI1) treatment case in 15 women with acute mastitis during lactation. After average 5.2 days of treatment, fever resolved with breast swelling and erythema resolved. Symptom resolution time was an average 1.8 days faster than antibiotic alone treatment.

Key Conclusion

Korean medicine combination treatment promotes inflammation resolution of acute mastitis and increases recovery speed when combined with antibiotics.

Summary

Fourteen RCTs (1,186 patients) evaluating effects of ginger-based herbal medicine (Sobanha-Gabokryeong-tang, etc.) treatment for hyperemesis gravidarum were systematically reviewed. Nausea severity (Rhodes Index) decreased by an average of 48% in the herbal medicine administration group, with vomiting frequency decreasing from an average of 3.2 to 0.8 times per day. No negative effects were observed on fetal safety indicators.

Key Conclusion

Ginger-based herbal medicine is effective for nausea and vomiting relief of hyperemesis gravidarum and is a treatment with confirmed fetal safety.

A cohort study comparing Danggwijakyak-san administration group (38 patients) and non-administration group (38 patients) in 76 pregnant women with severe lower limb edema in late pregnancy. After 4 weeks of treatment, lower limb circumference decreased by an average of 2.8 cm, with subjective discomfort scores from edema also improving by 58%. No significant changes in blood pressure or proteinuria confirmed safety.

An RCT comparing herbal medicine (modified Bangpungtongseong-san) and electroacupuncture treatment with dietary therapy in 104 women whose weight had not recovered 6 months or more postpartum. After 12 weeks of treatment, weight decreased by an average of 5.8 kg in the Korean medicine combination treatment group, superior to dietary therapy group (2.9 kg). Body fat percentage and waist circumference also significantly decreased.

After 8 weeks of treatment, discharge volume decreased by 68% in the combination group, significantly more effective than monotherapy group (42%). Vaginal discharge pH also recovered to normal range.
