Summary

An RCT evaluating the effect of combined herbal medicine (modified Ojayeonjong-hwan) and acupuncture therapy in 94 patients with male infertility. After 12 weeks of treatment, sperm motility increased from 38% to 52%, with significantly improved sperm concentration and normal morphology rates. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, an oxidative stress indicator, also markedly decreased.

Key Conclusion

Korean medicine combination treatment significantly improves semen parameters of male infertility and contributes to enhancing fertilization ability through reducing sperm oxidative stress.

Clinical pregnancy rate of the acupuncture combination group was 43.2%, significantly higher than controls (33.8%), with also improved endometrial receptivity-related indicators on embryo transfer day.

A prospective cohort study comparing Korean medicine treatment combination group (82 couples) and non-combination group (80 couples) in 162 infertile couples undergoing IUI. Pregnancy rate per IUI cycle in the Korean medicine combination group was 22.0%, higher than non-combination group (14.8%), with significantly improved endometrial thickness and E2 levels.

An RCT comparing low-frequency electroacupuncture treatment (twice weekly, 12 weeks) and sham acupuncture in 108 anovulatory women diagnosed with PCOS. Ovulation rate of the electroacupuncture treatment group was 67%, significantly higher than the sham acupuncture group (38%), with also improved testosterone levels and LH/FSH ratio.

An RCT comparing auricular acupuncture treatment (uterus point, endocrine point, shenmen point) and sham auricular acupuncture in 120 women with primary dysmenorrhea. Over 3 cycles, VAS pain scores in the auricular acupuncture treatment group decreased from 7.2 to 3.1, significantly more effective than sham auricular acupuncture group. Analgesic intake frequency also decreased by 62%.

A cross-sectional study analyzing hormonal changes from pharmacopuncture (Angelica, Cnidium pharmacopuncture) treatment in 92 women with oligomenorrhea (cycle 40 days or longer). The pharmacopuncture treatment experience group showed FSH/LH ratio closer to normal range, with significantly higher estradiol levels. Stress-related cortisol levels also tended to be lower.

Fifteen RCTs (total 1,284 patients) evaluating acupuncture effects on chronic pelvic pain related to endometriosis were systematically reviewed. The acupuncture group showed average 2.8-point reduction in chronic pelvic pain VAS scores, with also significantly alleviated dyspareunia and dyschezia. Adverse events were markedly fewer compared to GnRH agonists.

An RCT comparing combined herbal medicine (modified Sobokchugeo-tang) and acupuncture therapy with GnRH agonists in 96 women diagnosed with adenomyosis. After 6 months of treatment, pain reduction rate in the Korean medicine combination treatment group (68%) was similar to the GnRH group (72%), but recurrence rate after treatment completion was markedly lower in the Korean medicine group (22%) compared to GnRH group (58%).

Key Conclusion

Korean medicine combination treatment shows effects similar to GnRH agonists for pain management of adenomyosis, with lower recurrence rates favoring long-term management.

A 6-month cohort study comparing vaginal fumigation combination group (62 patients) and antibiotic alone group (62 patients) in 124 women with recurrent vaginitis. Six-month recurrence rate in the vaginal fumigation combination group was 18.3%, significantly lower than the antibiotic alone group (41.9%), with also restored normal lactobacilli ratio in the vagina.
