In the Age of Fine Dust — Protecting the Lung Mucosa with Gyeongokgo

The air we breathe every day is attacking our lungs

Ultrafine dust (PM2.5) penetrates as far as the alveoli, causing chronic inflammation and damaging the bronchial mucosa. When dry indoor environments (air conditioning, heating) are added, the respiratory defense system is significantly weakened.

The lungs (肺) and body fluids in Korean medicine

In Korean medicine the lung is called "the delicate organ (嬌臟) — the most fragile of the organs". As the only organ that comes into direct contact with outside air, it is the first to be damaged by dryness and pollution.

  • The lungs need sufficient body fluids (津液) to keep the mucosa moist
  • When fluids run dry → dry cough, dry nose, scratchy throat, dry skin
  • Gyeongokgo is an ideal combination that fills body fluids with fresh Rehmannia root (生地黃) and replenishes lung qi with Korean ginseng (人蔘)

Use during fine-dust seasons

We recommend a focused 4 to 8 weeks of intake during the heavy fine-dust spring (March to May) and the indoor-heating winter (November to February). It is especially effective for those with dry cough, dry nose, and throat discomfort.

Parallel care to protect the lungs

  • Wear KF94 masks — the basics of blocking ultrafine dust
  • Maintain indoor humidity at 50-60% (use a humidifier)
  • Pear (梨), platycodon, and Liriope tea — foods that moisten the lungs
  • Rinse the nose (nasal irrigation) after coming home — to wash off fine dust stuck to the mucosa
