Table of Contents
Both are tonics, so what's the difference?
Gongjindan and Gyeongokgo are both representative Korean medicine tonics, but they target different constitutions and effects. "Which of the two should I take?" is one of the most frequently asked questions at Korean medicine clinics.
Gongjindan: a prescription that lifts essence and energy (精氣)
- Core ingredients: musk (Moschus, 麝香), deer antler (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum), Angelica gigas root, Cornus officinalis fruit
- Main effects: Specialized in rapidly boosting vitality and concentration in a short period
- Suitable for: Those whose stamina has dropped sharply due to overwork or jet lag, students, those with a major event ahead
- Characteristics: The opening-the-orifices (開竅) action of musk clears the head and quickly promotes circulation
Gyeongokgo: a prescription that fills baseline stamina
- Core ingredients: fresh Rehmannia root (生地黃), Korean ginseng, Poria, honey
- Main effects: Tonifies the lungs, spleen, and stomach, and replenishes body fluids (津液) to improve dryness and weakness
- Suitable for: Those chronically low in stamina, those who get sick frequently, those with weak lungs or respiratory systems
- Characteristics: A prescription that gradually builds up baseline stamina through long-term use
Quick selection guide
If you need to boost your stamina urgently, Gongjindan is suitable; if you need to consistently build up baseline stamina, Gyeongokgo is appropriate. Of course, depending on your constitution, taking both together or even a different prescription altogether may be more appropriate, so it is best to decide after a pulse diagnosis.
