Children cannot put pain into words, so it shows as fussiness, changed sleep, less activity, or avoiding a particular posture. That does not mean a child without symptoms must be treated — if it is not needed, we will say let us watch and wait. A blow to the head, vomiting or listlessness needs emergency care immediately.

Q. My child keeps talking about the accident — is that all right?

A.

Immediately after an accident it is a common reaction. If it continues more than a month, we recommend looking at counselling alongside.

📝 Detailed Answer

Repeatedly talking about the accident or re-enacting it in play may be part of the child processing the event. It generally decreases with time.

If it continues more than a month, or the child cannot sleep, is frightened of being alone, or becomes unable to do what they did before, we recommend looking at counselling alongside. We will advise on where to go.
