A formulation tailored for the joints

Gwanjeoldan is based on the Donguibogam principle that tonifying the liver and kidney (肝腎) strengthens the tendons and bones (筋骨). In Korean medicine, the liver governs the tendons (筋) and the kidney governs the bones (骨), so weak liver-kidney function leads to weak joints.

Analysis of the core herbs

  • Deer antler (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum, 鹿茸): Protects chondrocytes and promotes IGF-1 to create an environment for joint regeneration. The most central and high-value herb in Gwanjeoldan.
  • Achyranthes root (牛膝): As its name "cow's knee" suggests, it is specialized for the knee and lower-body joints. Improves joint blood flow and suppresses inflammation.
  • Eucommia bark (杜仲): Tonifies the liver and kidney and strengthens the tendons and bones. A frequently used herb for low back pain and weak knees.
  • Goji berry (枸杞子): Replenishes the essence (精) of the liver and kidney, with antioxidant action that slows joint aging.
  • Angelica root (當歸): Promotes blood circulation and improves nutrient supply around the joints.
  • Dipsacus root (續斷): A herb specialized for strengthening muscles and ligaments, supporting joint stability.

Synergy among the herbs

Gwanjeoldan is a complex formulation rather than a single herb, so each ingredient enhances the effects of the others. Deer antler creates the regenerative environment, Achyranthes root and Eucommia bark improve local circulation, and Angelica root promotes systemic blood flow so that the herbal compounds reach the joints effectively.

Adjustments by constitution

  • Heat-prone constitutions: adjust the proportion of deer antler and add heat-clearing herbs such as Anemarrhena rhizome (知母).
  • Damp-prone constitutions: add damp-dispelling herbs such as Job's tears (薏苡仁) and atractylodes (蒼朮).
  • Severely cold constitutions: strengthen warming and tonifying herbs such as aconite (附子) and dried ginger (乾薑).
