When the nose is blocked, the bronchi suffer too
When chronic rhinitis blocks the nose, mouth breathing becomes habitual. Air that enters through the mouth is no longer warmed, humidified, or filtered, and reaches the pharynx and bronchi directly — leading to pharyngitis, laryngitis, and bronchial hypersensitivity. The Korean medicine adage "a bad nose makes for bad lungs" finds confirmation in modern medicine.
The integrated Korean medicine approach: Lung-spleen qi deficiency (肺脾氣虛)
- Lung (肺): the nose, bronchi, and lungs are managed as one system — rhinitis and bronchial issues are treated together
- Spleen (脾): the source of the fluids that keep mucous membranes healthy — tonifying the spleen-stomach restores the mucosa
- Socheongnyong-tang (小靑龍湯): for clear nasal discharge with cough — treats nose and bronchi together
- Okbyeongpung-san (玉屛風散, Yu Ping Feng San): for recurrent colds and rhinitis from defensive qi (衛氣) deficiency — strengthens immune defenses
Breaking the rhinitis-bronchial chain
- Treat nasal congestion first — being able to breathe through the nose is what protects the bronchi
- Nasal irrigation: rinsing with saline morning and evening reduces mucosal inflammation
- Manage indoor dust and house dust mites — wash bedding in hot water once a week
