Housewife's Elbow — Repetitive Strain from Housework
Table of Contents
Daily housework overworks the elbow
Mopping, wringing laundry, lifting heavy pots, and twisting cleaning rags place repeated micro-loads on the tendons around the elbow. One or two episodes are not a problem, but repeating the same motion every day for years leads to progressive degenerative changes at the tendon attachments. So-called housewife's elbow often appears as a mixed form of lateral and medial epicondylitis.
Why is it more common in women
In addition to the physical burden of housework, female hormones play a role. The decline in estrogen around menopause reduces the elasticity and recovery capacity of tendon tissue. Women also tend to have less forearm muscle strength than men, so the same task places a higher load ratio on the tendons.
- Bilateral involvement: Because housework uses both hands, symptoms often appear in both elbows simultaneously.
- Pain pattern: Starts as morning stiffness and worsens after housework activity.
- Night pain: In severe cases, throbbing elbow pain at night disrupts sleep.
Korean medicine treatment and motion correction
Acupuncture and pharmacopuncture relieve inflammation at the tendon attachment and promote tissue regeneration. At the same time, correction of daily motions is essential.
- Acupuncture and pharmacopuncture: Local treatment at the painful site for rapid symptom relief
- Alternating hands: Consciously switch hands so that the load does not concentrate on one arm.
- Use of tools: Use a stick mop, electric laundry spinner, or similar tools to reduce strain on the wrist and elbow.
- Task splitting: Spread tasks throughout the day rather than doing them all at once, allowing the elbow time to recover.
Adequate rest is the key to recovery
Tendinopathy is a condition that requires time for tissue recovery. Continuing housework while in pain cuts treatment effectiveness in half. Sharing tasks with family members and consciously reducing elbow use early in treatment is the most effective therapeutic strategy.
