Gongjindan Quality — Musk Content and Herb Selection Are Key
Table of Contents
Not all Gongjindan is the same
The quality of products sold under the name "Gongjindan" varies enormously. Effects differ greatly depending on the content of the core ingredient — musk (Moschus, 麝香) — the grade of deer antler, and the manufacturing environment.
Musk (Moschus, 麝香): the heart of Gongjindan
- Natural musk vs. synthetic musk: Natural musk (containing dozens of aromatic compounds beyond muscone) and synthetic musk (single-compound muscone synthesis) differ greatly in efficacy
- Recommended content: At least 30 mg of natural musk per pill is the recommended standard. Less than this reduces the opening-the-orifices (開竅) effect
- How to verify: Check whether the Korean medicine clinic specifies the musk content on the prescription
Grades of deer antler (Cervi Cornu Pantotrichum)
Deer antler is divided according to where it is cut: tip section (분골, the topmost part) → upper section → middle section → lower section. The tip and upper sections are richest in active components such as pantocrin. Low-cost Gongjindan may use the lower section or even bone powder.
Differences in manufacturing
- Traditional handmade: Herbs finely ground, kneaded with honey, and coated with gold leaf — good absorption and shelf life
- Mass production: Machine-pressed in capsule form — convenient, but herbal blending precision may be lower
- Storage: Refrigeration is standard; once opened, it is recommended to take within 2 weeks
Checklist for choosing a Korean medicine clinic
- Are the musk content and origin clearly disclosed?
- Is the deer antler grade (upper or middle section) explained?
- Is the prescription adjusted after a constitution-based pulse diagnosis?
- Is the manufacturing environment hygienic and transparent?
